Macaws

Macaws include some of the largest and most stately birds in the parrot family.  They range from the smallest at 12 inches long to the Hyacinth Macaw measuring about 40 inches from head to tail.

They get their name from the fruit they feed on – that of the macaw palm – native in the Amazon region of South America.
The Blue and Gold Macaw and Green-winged Macaw share approximately the same length of about 33 inches however the Green-winged is much larger in body density.

Scarlet Macaws are often considered the most beautiful macaws with scarlet red plumage, light blue backs, rumps and upper tail coverts and yellow in the center of the wings.

Young macaws can be distinguished by grayish-colored iris, lighter beak coloration and shorter tails.

Macaws are not considered good pets for the beginner bird fancier however they are used lot in shows for they’re talking, trick abilities and free flights.  They can be an owner’s “best pal”.
