Most everyone can recognize Cockatoos – the white, crested parrots.  

However there are several other species in black, gray and pink.  There are about sixteen different species in all.  

The most distinguishing trait of Cockatoos is their ability to fully raise their crests.  Erected crests are signs of strong arousal including fright, sexual excitement and to invite another bird to groom them.

As pets, be aware they have very loud voices and have the ability to destroy things since they need constant occupation for their beaks.  They also are one of the most cuddly breeds – they love to nestle. 

Because of their craving for attention, it is advised an owner schedule regular playtime.  The amount of time an owner spends in the beginning relationship with this bird will decide the future temperament of the bird.
