Amazon Parrots

Amazons originate from South and Central America and also the Caribbean Islands.

There are over 25 species and form one of the largest and well-known groups of parrots.

They range in size from 9½ inches (the Spectacled Amazon) to 18 inches (the endangered Imperial Amazon).

Most Amazons are basically green with contrasting markings on their head and tail and only noticeable on their wings while in flight.

Even though personalities in the different species vary, the Yellow-fronted, Double Yellow-headed and the Yellow-naped Amazons have fun mimicking human language, laughs and singing.
Many Amazons, as pet birds, are devoted to one person.  Some prefer attention from men while others will only tolerate females.

Amazons are not recommended for children’s pets because they can bite hard if teased or excited.

A trait of the Amazon species is being able to distinguish whether a bird is young or mature.

In general, an immature bird will have grayish-brown eyes with their iris turning to a dull orange by the time they reach five months old.  The majority of adult Amazons have orange iris.

Before purchasing an Amazon as a pet the only guarantee a potential owner has that the bird is young is the eye color.

A pet Amazon should be obtained before the immature eye color changes to orange.
